My presentation focused on artistic strategies that deal with the dissemination of alternative realities. The background to this is the fact that our perception of reality is less stable than we think – it is constructed, narrated and often deliberately manipulated.
The Public Fiction concept uses artistic strategies to make these processes visible and to open up new perspectives on reality. I presented examples of artworks that use archival manipulation, performative interventions, and speculative narratives to question which stories dominate in the public consciousness – and which are suppressed.
The aim is not only to critique existing power structures, but also to imagine and make tangible alternative futures. How do fake news, satire, or staged media events change our understanding of truth? And how can art contribute not only to deconstructing reality, but also to reconstructing it? The lecture shows how Public Fiction navigates between fiction and documentation, deception and revelation – and thus expands the realm of the possible.
The Swiss network weeks are organized in turn by the four German-speaking art colleges in Switzerland (in Bern, Basel, Zurich and Lucerne). The art education students come together and gain insights into current topics in art education and the research priorities of the individual art colleges. This year's network week took place from February 10 to 14, 2025, hosted by the HKB.
The focus was on the format “public.live”, which dealt with the public sphere(s). How do public spheres arise? How can we act in them and help shape them? And what does “public sphere” mean anyway?
